tempioOn 26th of September the “Italian Business & SDGs Annual Forum” will be held in Venice, on the Island of San Servolo sponsored by the the Global Compact Network Italy Foundation (GCNI Foundation) in collaboration with VIU – Venice International University and the Ca’ Foscari University in Venice and with the support of FriulAdria and Edison SpA.

The Forum will bring together companies of all sizes, from various production sectors as long as they are engaged in, or intending to be, in the implementation of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. Representatives of institutions, civil society, and academic and research institutions will also take part.

The meeting is considered to be an important opportunity for a multi-stakeholder discussion on the role that the private sector is called upon to play in support of the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. The focus will be intensified through the identifying and sharing of: experience and knowledge, issues of interest, discussion topics, further study requirements, and design guidelines.

Based on the outcomes of the initiative, the GCNI Foundation will define a plan of activities in support of businesses that are willing to make a committment to making a contribution to achieving the SDGs.

Recently, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has called for Europe and the European business sector to play a global leadership role in the implementation strategy of the SDGs. During a meeting held in Brussels in May, George Dassis - EESC President, affirmed: "The SDGs must be implemented immediately, translated into new business models, to achieve a win-win situation, for the benefit of people’s living and working conditions as well as those of businesses."

With this in mind, the September Forum is adopting an innovative methodology (Open Space Technology) which allows for an extensive consultation on the needs of the companies involved at National level on sustainability in the SDGs’ era, as well as the opportunity to create new collaborations and partnerships among participants in the Forum.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted on 25th September 2015 by the General Assembly of the  United Nations, consists of 17 goals and 169 sub-objectives of International development which, together, define an action plan for people, the planet, economic growth and peace. The SDGs indicate the UN Agenda for 2030 and their success requie close cooperation between governments, business and civil society.

The private sector can play a key role in achieving every goal, through new and responsible business modelsinvestment, innovation, technology and the activation of partnerships. The SDGs are turning to all businesses, of all sizes and belonging to any sector of production, striving to seek innovative solutions to meet the new challenges of sustainable development.

Created by Harrison Owen, Open Space Technology is a methodology that has revolutionalised the way we conduct meetings, conferences and forums. The work plan is made by the same participants who are then free to further explore whatever most interests them in the parallel sessions. For further information go towww.openspaceworld.org
